In the short stories title The Sojourner and What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, written by Carson McCullers and Raymond Carver respectively, the writers tell a story about love and its changing attitudes. The main characters in these stories all vary in regard to their personalities and their individual idiosyncrasies, however, the message being conveyed by McCullers and Carver is that of the changing nature of love, and how it can impact an individual’s sense of self in respect to how one defines their relationships with others. Ferris’ relationship with Elizabeth is friendly in nature, but with underto nes of longing for what they once had and what Bill has now, her affection. This is referenced in the story when Ferris reflects upon his past with Elizabeth in disbelief, saying â€Å"Was it indeed true that at one time, he [Ferris] had called this stranger, Elizabeth, Little Butterduck during nights of love, that they [Ferris and Elizabeth] had lived together, shared perhaps a thousand days and nights†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . This statement gives the reader in indication of how he felt about their relationship. However, upon further inspection, it is implied that Ferris is not jealous of the relationship that Bill and Elizabeth have, but rather the interaction and familial bond that they share. When one applies Stryker’s concepts to the experiences and interactions of these characters, it is possible to determine how the characters’ relationships shape their sense of self. In regard to role identity, the roles being portrayed are: Bill as the loving husband and devoted father, Elizabeth as the compassionate wife and caring friend, and Ferris as the reminiscent ex-lover, which essentially makes him the third wheel. How does one create the perfect villain for a story? What qualities are needed in such a character? A good place to start when constructing a villain is to look at William Shakespeare’s villain in Othello, a man called Iago. Iago is wonderfully devious. Throughout the play, he not only poisons Othello’s vision of Desdemona, he does this with no one, excepting Roderigo, the wiser. There are several reasons that make Iago such a terrifying villain. Shakespeare gave certain qualities to his creation that made Iago more than just a evil character. These qualities transform Iago into the truly insidious character seen in the play. From the beginning of Othello to the time that Iago is revealed as the culprit, everyone trusts Iago and looks to†¦show more content†¦That fact in and of itself should make Cassio weary of Iago. Added to that, Iago influences Cassio to drink more alcohol than Cassio can handle. This leads to the fight between Cassio and Roderigo. During t his time Iago poisons Montano’s impressions of Cassio by telling him, â€Å"I fear the trust Othello puts in him,†(II.iii.120). Iago also says alcohol â€Å"‘Tis evermore the prologue to his sleep.†(II.iii.123). Iago, again, uses Othello’s trust in his character. Othello, when he finally gets the story from Iago, is blinded by Iago’s â€Å"honesty and love† and says that these â€Å"doth mince [his judgement in] this matter,/ making it light to Cassio.†(II.iii.241-242). Nevertheless, Cassio asks for and acts on advice from Iago. This advice is the crucial mandate that ensures Iago will be able to plant the seed of doubt in Othello’s mind. Then, there is the matter of Othello’s wife, Emilia. One would think that being so close to Iago, she would know something of his deceitful nature. Do we have peace if we are not been shoot by a gun? As the word reference dictionary states, peace is freedom from disturbance; and the freedom or cessation of war. In fact, peace is not only the absence of wars and weapons; peace is an inner emotional state that can be reflected to others in order to maintain good relationships of the people around us. Peace is not a dream; it is hard work, and there is nothing naive, glamorous or simplistic about it. (Arias 1). As this famous writer is stating; achieving peace is more than just stopping the wars, peace consists in hard and not so simple work. There can be a lack of peace without the necessary use of fighting and physical aggression, peace can also be disrupted with discrimination, stereotypes, and judging. If we want to maintain peace upon others we should have our mind and emotions cleared of bad feelings towards other people. Even though it is a great part of it, peace is not just stopping the violence, but also to respect others way to think or act, this way you could maintain a healthy relationship with people that surround you and make your environment nonviolent. Although weapons are the ones that can cause the damage, we as humans can be interfering with peace by judging, arguing, and discriminating against others. Weapons are not the ones who disrupt peace, humans and their actions are. Many people agree that if we can destroy all the weapons in the world there wouldn? be violence any more. This community make an effort to distribute the message of peace but if they don? change the way of offending people by not respecting them for what they are their message is never going to be expanded. Therefore, in order to have a happy and peaceful life you should live in peace inside yourself. Many people think that the external world is what gives you peace or not. On the contrary, our internal self emotion is what gives the external world calm. For example, in the book A Separate Peace, Gene didn’t live with inner peace himself, because he had envy and jealousy towards his friend Phineas. Even though Gene didn? ever say anything or react violently he was living in pain and resentment towards his best friend. As a result, we can see that Gene started to think that everything his friend did was in order to make him not progressive. All these feelings that Gene had were because he lived in resentment towards his friend and consequently, he couldn? t enjoy anything, even though in the external situation there was nothing to interrupt his peace.
